Barbie has overtaken Super Mario as the highest-grossing film of the year — at least in North America.

“Barbie” is still unstoppable about a month after its theatrical release. In North America, the film by director Greta Gerwig (40) has now overtaken the hitherto most successful movie of 2023, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, and thus won the race for the highest-grossing release of the year. This is reported by the US industry portal “Variety”.

The comedy, starring Margot Robbie (33) and Ryan Gosling (42), has raked in $575.4 million at the box office since its theatrical release on July 20, surpassing the $574 million of the ” Super Mario” movie obsolete.

“Barbie” should also break this record worldwide in the coming days. To date, the film has grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, according to Variety, and Super Mario has grossed $1.35 billion. The two films are therefore the only ones to have broken the billion mark in 2023.

“Barbie” has already broken these records

The great success of “Barbie” at the box office was already apparent on the first cinema weekend. In the US, the film grossed $162 million in its first weekend and became the highest-grossing theatrical debut of the year. In addition, the blockbuster was the number one cinema film for four consecutive weekends. Another milestone: “Barbie” is the most successful film by a female director ever.

With just 17 days in cinemas, the release was also the fastest Warner Bros. film to gross $1 billion worldwide. Industry forecasts are that “Barbie” could also surpass 2011’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” as the studio’s highest-grossing global release of all time. The Harry Potter film grossed $1.34 billion at the time.
