Barbie: what was Margot Robbie’s slumber party for?

A slumber party and group conversation: these are two methods that were used for the cast of “Barbie” to bond on the set of the film!

The highly anticipated Barbie will present us with a star-studded cast. And so that these actors can bond, Margot Robbie has organized a slumber party for her and her Barbie colleagues!

Speaking to People magazine (via ComingSoon), Simu Liu — who plays one of the film’s Ken — said:

Margot was so awesome. She arranged a slumber party with the Barbies before photography began, and the Kens were allowed to either visit them briefly or give them a call and say hello. So we made sure to show our support but not to impose too much with our presence. And all the Barbies and Ken participated in a group chat.

But for one specific cast member, however, group chat was inaccessible.

I don’t have an iPhone myself… I have a flip phone,” said Michael Cera, who plays a character named Alan in the feature film. “But I still think I didn’t belong in [la conversation de groupe] anyway, because [mon personnage] Allan is kind of in his own little world. Greta’s gift to me when I arrived was a disc with an image of NSYNC’s ‘No Strings Attached’ which seemed to be, in a way, a real guiding light in that character’s origin story.

Issa Rae, who plays the role of Barbie President in the film, meanwhile detailed some of the many activities the cast and crew took part in on set, while lamenting missing the famous slumber party.

I arrived late. I was so sad [de manquer la soirée pyjama]. But there were so many activities to get closer. Simu’s birthday happened there. And Margot and Tom [Ackerley, son mari et co-producteur du film] organized movie nights.

THE WEEKLY “PINK DAYS” OF MARGOT ROBBIE

Ryan Gosling, the main Ken of Greta Gerwig’s film, also revealed some little filming secrets. The actor specifically recalled the “pink days” that Margot Robbie organized for cast and crew, where everyone had to wear pink or pay a fine.

Margot had this pink day once a week, where everyone had to wear something pink. And if you didn’t, you were fined”, he recounted. “She walked around to collect the fines and she donated them to charity. What was really special was how excited the male team members were. At the end of the movie, they all got together and with their own money they made pink shirts with rainbow fringe.

He added: “It was an opportunity for them to show their respect and admiration for what Margot and Greta were creating. It was almost like that scene at the end of Dead Poets Society where they all get on their desks and say, ‘O Captain! My captain!’

Barbie will debut in our theaters on July 19, 2023.
