Bard: Google opens a waiting list, here’s how to get on it

The generative AI craze continues, and Google Bard is finally ready to show what it’s capable of, after a somewhat failed hasty start. You can now join the waiting list for Google’s experimental chatbot service.

Google Bard is meant to be an assistive AI chatbot, similar to ChatGPT, with human-level conversational responses and technical capabilities such as text editing and generation. Crucially, Bard will be able to access Google, giving it a leg up on ChatGPT, which can only access information older than 2021.

Google Bard will therefore be in more direct competition with Bing Chat, which uses GPT-4, OpenAI’s most advanced LLM, and has access to the entire web.

Bard uses its own big language model, LaMDA, instead of GPT

Bard will use its own large language model (LLM), LaMDA, instead of GPT, which most chatbots use. At first, Google Bard will use a lightweight, optimized version of LaMDA.

When Google Bard was first announced in February, it came under intense scrutiny due to factual errors in its demo. In response, in Tuesday’s announcement, Google said Bard is quite capable of making mistakes.

Google wants users to share their feedback in order to improve the LLM and make it progress. “As people start using Bard and testing its capabilities, they’re going to surprise us,” Google boss Sundar Pichai said in a message to staff. “Things are going to go wrong. But user feedback is key to improving the product and the underlying technology,” he added.

But for French users, it is not yet won. Bard is not yet available in France. Google is starting to roll it out in the UK and US today. And there is no doubt that Bard will arrive in France very soon. So when that happens, here’s how to get on the waiting list.
