If Christopher Nolan undoubtedly marked the 2000s with his trilogy devoted to the hero Batman, two other directors had already tried their hand at the exercise before him by each making two films on the vigilante of Gotham.
First there was Tim Burton, who brought this hero up to date with a first feature film released in 1989, which featured a Michael Keaton in the title role, opposed to a magnificent Joker played by the talented Jack Nicholas.
Three years later came its sequel, Batman: The Challenge, this time with the presence of multiple secondary characters including an iconic Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), a Penguin straight out of the Burton universe (Dany DeVito), not to mention the terrible Max Shreck (Christopher Walken).
Joel Schumacher will try to take up the torch with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. But neither the two main actors – Val Kilmer and George Clooney – nor the string of stars summoned to give the Dark Knight a hard time (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Tommy Lee Jones) will have really succeeded to convince the public and critics.
It was therefore in 2005 that Christopher Nolan, a young thirty-five-year-old director with only three feature films to his credit, tried to breathe new life into the franchise with a much darker universe than the previous ones.
The hero will this time be interpreted by Christian Bale, who will find the director the following year for The Prestige, and who will once again take on the cape of the masked vigilante for two sequels, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
