FC Bayern Munich is honoring its goalkeeper legend Sepp Maier (80) with a special exhibition on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Since the end of February, Bayern fans have been able to watch the “All the best, Sepp Maier!” show in the Allianz Arena. regard. “You were the first entertainer in international football”

Sepp Maier celebrated his 80th birthday on February 28th. From 1962 to 1979 he looked after the Munich goal. With his club and in the national team, Maier won everything there was to win during this time. “I have the feeling: Sepp Maier has always been there,” said President Herbert Hainer (69) at the opening of the exhibition in view of this success story, and added: “Dear Sepp, in my eyes you are the original Bavarian of ‘Mia san mia ‘.”

Hainer then described the legendary keeper, who was also known for his jokes on and off the pitch, as the “first entertainer in international football” and “the first Thomas Müller of FC Bayern”.

Sepp Maier would like to thank Uli Hoeneß in particular

As is well known, Maier had to end his world career prematurely in 1979 after a car accident. Uli Hoeneß (72) rushed the seriously injured man to the hospital and ensured that his life-threatening injuries were properly treated. “If it wasn’t for Uli, I would have been dead a long time ago. Thank you for giving me another 45 years of FC Bayern,” Maier said at today’s exhibition opening, addressing the Honorary President of Munich, who was also present.

The exhibition “All the best, Sepp Maier!” runs until May 5th and is part of the regular FC Bayern Museum in Munich’s Allianz Arena. On display are “selected exhibits” from Maier’s life and work, including goalkeeper gloves “developed by the keeper in the 1970s”, as stated on the show’s official website.
