Be careful, this manufacturer has abandoned its connected objects

When investing in connected objects, we generally expect them to be supported by their manufacturer for several years. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and some manufacturers decide to throw in the towel, leaving their customers with unusable products. This is what has just happened with a well-known German manufacturer.

Devices and other connected objects are increasingly present in our daily lives, but they are also subject to a growing risk: that of becoming obsolete due to a decision by the manufacturer or other factors.

This is what recently happened to products from the German brand Gigaset, specializing in connected objects for the home.

A rare abandoned technology

Gigaset used a relatively uncommon technology for its connected objects: DECT ULE (ULE for Ultra Low Energy).

As iGen explains, unfortunately, the division dedicated to these products ceased its activities on March 29, 2024. This means that all of this brand’s connected objects (sensors, cameras, etc.) are unusable.

The service’s home page provides detailed explanations of the situation: if the division linked to DECT telephones (and the rare smartphones) was taken over after the company’s bankruptcy, this is not the case for that linked to connected objects. The connected products and cameras that depend on the servers have therefore been out of use for a few days and the company does not plan to recover them.

An FAQ provides some details on the consequences of this decision, such as the fact that the smoke detector will continue to function for its alarm, but it is the only product in this case.

Concerning refund, it is possible to request it. However, there is no guarantee that you will not receive these reimbursements.

Products still on sale

The most surprising thing about this matter is that, even if Gigaset no longer sells its products, they are still available in many stores, including Amazon. You must therefore be vigilant.
