Be careful, you might want to play the magical The Plucky Squire

During its conference broadcast as part of the Summer Game Fest, Devolver Digital announced an intriguing and magical game: The Plucky Squire. We can’t wait to get our hands on it.

Each year, Devolver Digital manages to make an impression with a daring video game. In 2021, during gamescom, the publisher had intrigued with Cult of the Lamb, where it will be necessary to set up a sect with cute snowmen. In 2022, it is with The Plucky Squire that it might attract attention. Announced during his conference broadcast on June 9 as part of the Summer Game Fest, it makes you want to take the controller to discover its gameplay mixing 2D and 3D phases.

The trailer starts in the room of a child named Sam, who would do well to clean up a bit. On his desk is a book whose pages are animated. Inside, a hero named Jot lives great adventures — flat. The first minutes show fairly standard 2D portions. And then the magic ends up operating: Jot will discover that there is a real three-dimensional world. The transitions from one universe to another really look amazing.

The Plucky Squire recalls It Takes Two

The Plucky Squire only needs a little over a minute to prove that it is overflowingly generous – both visually and in its gameplay, articulated around multiple tasks to accomplish (we clearly see shooting phases and … in a jetpack). The Plucky Squire very reminiscent of It Takes Two, one of the best games released in recent years, in this propensity to draw very far into the imagination. The result is a story-like experience that should be super varied – in addition to being very pretty to watch.

Puzzles to solve, badgers to fight, jetpack flight and many other deliciously fun activities await you “, promises the studio All Possible Futures, founded by James Turner (who was the artistic director of Pokémon Sword and Shield). The inspirations are numerous, justified by a narration of implacable logic: to win the game, the villain of the book expels the good guys, who then find themselves left to their own devices in the real world.

If the grip lives up to these many ambitions, then The Plucky Squire could be one of the highlights of 2023 (release date currently unknown). The game is expected on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. And we’ll keep an eye on it in the coming months.
