Anyone who opens their laptop to replace a defective component or upgrade the memory will soon discover QR codes there. You should definitely scan these before you lend a hand.

In the future, QR codes in Lenovo laptops will lead you directly to ordering spare parts and repair guides. (Source: Netzwelt)

Laptop manufacturer Lenovo will in future provide replaceable components in its laptops with a QR code. If you scan this, it will take you to the manufacturer’s website, where you can order a suitable replacement part directly. You will also find step-by-step instructions here that explain how to change the respective component.

Lenovo wants to make laptop repairs easier for you. The QR codes also serve to improve products. Because the code is linked to the respective serial number of the device and this allows Lenovo to conduct market research, an employee explains to us on the sidelines of the presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. For example, the manufacturer can determine which components are changed particularly frequently and draw conclusions for future products. This can also be used to determine whether there is a problem with the component from a specific batch.

The QR codes will initially be used in the new ThinkBook models T14 and T16. They will later be installed in other model series. From our point of view, a good idea. What caused confusion during the presentation, however, was that in addition to the QR codes for the repair guides, there were also other QR codes in the housing that serve a different purpose. It is unclear whether Lenovo visually distinguishes the repair codes from the other codes on the production models.

The QR codes are not the only measure taken by the manufacturer to simplify repairs. For example, stickers now show where which components are located. Even laypeople can identify the SSD in the notebook. Lenovo has also improved the internal structure of the T models. The touchpad can now be replaced without having to remove the motherboard first. You also now have direct access to the memory modules. The company iFixit, which specializes in repairs, gives the models 9.3 out of 10 points. The predecessors only achieved a score of 7.

In addition to the new T models, Lenovo also announced a transparent notebook in Barcelona. We’ll tell you what this is good for in the linked article.
