“Beautiful presents” – the most (un) peaceful time of the year

The classic comedy “Schöne Bescherungen” by Alan Ayckbourn premiered at the Salzburg State Theater. With a good helping of slapstick, family conflicts and plenty of humor, a wonderfully funny Christmas nightmare came about.

In 1980 Sir Alan Ayckborn wrote “Schöne Bescherungen”, a piece about the small and large conflicts that can arise in a middle-class family around the festival of love. Since then, comedy has been part of the standard pre-Christmas repertoire of many theaters. With his Salzburg production, Thomas Enzinger succeeded in making the local audience forget the pandemic madness. Lots of sex, a little blood and madness in front of a great set by artist “Toto” – that’s the recipe for success for an amusing evening at the theater. The family festival in the middle-class household of Neville (Matthias Hermann) and Belinda (Julienne Pfeil) is a weird show Characters and takes on the Christmas (in) peace in an extremely entertaining way. All in all, “Schöne Bescherungen” is a wonderful escape from everyday life before Christmas between shopping stress and omikron, which the audience laughed and applauded.
