From “Beauty and the Beast” to “Shrek”. Everyone should know these princess movies.

Princess films have to contend with many prejudices. For some these films are too romantic, for others the action is missing. This selection of films proves that a good fairy tale film does not have to be boring or predictable at all, but rather exciting and exciting.

“Cinderella”: The classic

“Cinderella” (1950) is a real classic. Cinderella grows up with her stepmother and her mischievous stepsisters. The three are jealous of Cinderella’s beauty and treat her like a maid. Cinderella works to the point of exhaustion and dreams of a better life. When the king throws a ball to find his son’s princess-to-be, Cinderella sets out, despite numerous obstacles. At the ball she finally falls in love with the prince and loses her famous glass slipper there. But the prince also loses his heart to Cinderella and sets out in search of the beautiful girl who fits the unique shoe. There will be a reunion with “Cinderella” on August 12 from 8:15 p.m. on Disney Channel as part of Princess Weeks and around the clock on the Disney + streaming service.

“Beauty and the Beast”: “Fairy tales are written by time…”

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) tells the story of the beautiful and clever Belle, whose father is being held captive by a beast in his castle. Brave Belle wants to free her father and offers to be his replacement. Belle quickly realizes that the castle and its objects are alive and befriends the lovable characters. Over time, she learns of the sad curse that was placed on the beast and the castle years ago… “Beauty and the Beast” airs August 26 at 8:15 p.m. on Disney Channel or on-demand on Disney+.

“Shrek”: A princess from the swamp

The “Shrek” series scores with a somewhat unusual protagonist: Princess Fiona. In the first part of the story, “Shrek: The Daredevil Hero” (2001), Fiona lives locked in a tower, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Due to a deal, ogre Shrek sets off on a journey to rescue Princess Fiona from the tower. Little does he know that Fiona is under a curse that will turn her into an ogre after nightfall. Fiona and Shrek eventually fall in love despite initial difficulties. The film can be seen on Netflix, among others.

Anne Hathaway becomes Princess Diaries

Apart from the cartoons, “The Princess Suddenly” (2001) tops the list of the best princess films. The film tells the story of 15-year-old Mia (Anne Hathaway, then 19) who suddenly learns that she is the Princess of Genovia. Her grandmother, the queen, tries to transform the frizzy-haired teenager into a confident princess. However, this task is not easy… The success of the first part was followed in 2004 by “Suddenly Princess 2”. Both films are available on the Disney+ streaming service.

Amy Adams is “Cursed”

“Verweihe” (2007) with Amy Adams (47) and Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey (56) offers a mixture of animation and real film. Young Giselle lives in the cartoon country of Andalasia and is about to marry Queen Narissa’s stepson. But the queen fights against the marriage with all means and pushes Giselle into a wishing well. She suddenly ends up in the middle of New York and under the wing of lawyer Robert… Fans had to wait a long time for a second part. Cursed 2 is set to come to Disney+ later this year.

“Princess Mononoke”: A dark fairy tale for older children

“Princess Mononoke” (1997) is a Japanese anime from the house of Ghibli, which is known among other things for “Spirited Away”. Wolf girl San (Princess Mononoke) fights with the animal gods of the forest against the people who want to cut down their homeland. The story deals with nature conservation and man’s influence on nature. The sometimes graphically brutal fairy tale is more suitable for older children and adults. The film is currently available to watch on Netflix.

“Merida: Legend of the Highlands”: The first female Pixar heroine

“Merida: Legend of the Highlands” (2012) is the first Pixar film with a female lead. The wild Merida would rather ride her horse Angus and practice archery all day than follow the usual habits of a princess. This causes a lot of trouble, especially for her mother. When it comes to finding the future for Merida, she takes drastic measures. “Merida – Legend of the Highlands” runs on August 27 at 8:15 p.m. on Disney Channel or alternatively on Disney+.
