As a result of a hacker attack, around 3,000 traffic offenders in a German district will probably get away with it without punishment. During the attack, servers were encrypted by malware.
Around 3,000 speed offenders got away with no punishment because of the big hacker attack last year in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. A district spokesman confirmed on Thursday that the procedures with drivers who were flashed had expired because the district could not process the data and finally deadlines were exceeded.
The period from mid-October – the time of the hacker attack on the municipal IT service provider – until the end of 2021 was affected. During this time, no owner queries could be made and no contact could be made with the Federal Motor Transport Authority. The “Schweriner Volkszeitung” had previously reported.
Hacker attack already took place at the end of 2021
During a cyber attack in October 2021, the servers of the Schwerin IT and Servicegesellschaft (SIS) and the Mecklenburg Municipal Service (KSM) were partially encrypted by malware. After the hacker attack, most of the systems in the district were shut down and only gradually started up again. The state capital Schwerin was also affected by the attack.
There, 357 cases of speed and parking offenders had to be stopped due to the statute of limitations, as a spokeswoman said. It is still unclear who is responsible for the attack.
