It’s Mike Pence’s birthday next week, and he’s also likely to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. Now, according to reports, the investigation into privately kept secret documents against him has also been dropped.
The investigation into former US Vice President Mike Pence for finding secret documents in his private home has been dropped, according to media reports. The Broadcaster NBC and CNN reported that the Justice Department had sent a letter informing the attorney for ex-President Donald Trump’s former deputy that the case was being dropped. Accordingly, there will be no criminal consequences for the politician of the Republican Party.
This is good news for the arch-conservative politician at an important time: According to media reports, the 63-year-old wants to enter the 2024 presidential race next Wednesday. Pence wants to announce in the state of Iowa that he is running for the Republican presidential nomination. Wednesday is also his 64th birthday.
According to a Pence lawyer, a “small number” of documents with potentially classified information were found in his private home in the state of Indiana in January. The files were “accidentally wrapped up” when Pence left the office of vice president in early 2021. The FBI later found another secret document during a search of the house.
The find had caused a stir because the FBI confiscated a large number of secret documents during a raid on ex-President Trump’s private home in August. Trump took the documents from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida at the end of his term in January 2021. A special investigator appointed by the Ministry of Justice is dealing with the handling of secret documents by the right-wing populist, who wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election.
Sound recording puts pressure on Trump
CNN recently reported that Trump had incriminated himself in an audio recording. The ex-president said in the summer of 2021 that he had a secret document from the Ministry of Defense about a possible attack on Iran. That would contradict his public statements that he had released all the secret documents he had taken with him and that the level of secrecy had therefore been lifted.
Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, also got into trouble when secret documents were found. The papers were discovered at a former office in Washington and at his home in Wilmington, Delaware. The documents date from his time as Vice President under President Barack Obama (2009 to 2017) and from his earlier time as a US Senator.
In this case, too, the Justice Department has appointed a special prosecutor. By law, presidents and vice presidents are required to submit official records to the National Archives at the end of their term of office.
