Behind its retro-futuristic look, this “electric motorcycle” hides an accessory like no other

Difficult to classify at first glance, the Joyce ’90 from Tozz Bike plays on nostalgia to offer a hybrid machine between the electric motorcycle and the speedbike… but will have to comply with European regulations to be able to launch here.

At Tozz Bike, we obviously have a taste for doing nothing like the others, and for confusing things. A simple glance at the electric scooters offered by this manufacturer of Turkish origin, the production factory located in Ankara (but the offices are now in London), and we better understand the influences of the designers and creators of the brand. A BMX handlebar, a skateboard deck-style platform, the Pipegun Sixteen and Original have a style that will delight those nostalgic for the 1990s.

And when Tozz Bike decides to launch into another niche, we also find a little of this melting pot of influences. So much so that we ultimately don’t really know what we’re looking at when we see the Joyce ’90 for the first time.

Long live the 90’s

Perhaps the most knowledgeable among you will immediately make the connection with a scooter that left its mark (especially aesthetically) on its time, the Honda Cub EZ90. Halfway between the scooter and the mini-motorcycle (cross), it was fully faired and came straight from the future.

This is a bit like the description that we could make of the Joyce ’90 which would add the bicycle dimension as well. And obviously, no more question of thermal engine, we are talking about 100% electric.

BMX handlebars here too, retractable headlight and one-piece fairing, we are deep in 90’s nostalgia. Moreover, most of the communication plays on this since ultimately we don’t know much about this strange machine.

No pedals

What looks like a motorcycle is actually an electric bike… or rather a speed bike. In fact, the brand seems to be somewhat lost in terms of approval: on the one hand, it categorizes its machine speed bike (in the eyes of French law) due to its 750 W motor and its ability to travel at 45 km/h… but on the other hand, no pedal is included to comply with the regulations.

Furthermore, Tozz explains that it is planning a model limited to 25 km/h, in order to respect the European laws inherent to electric bikes. The problem is that it makes no mention – and once again – of adding pedals. We obviously imagine that it will have to comply with the law and this mechanical constraint to approve its product.

In terms of autonomy, Tozz announces 45 km, which can be increased to 90 km by choosing from the different battery options. Note that these are removable and can be recharged in three hours using a fast charger.

In the absence of pedals, Tozz Bike has equipped its Joyce’ 90 with absolutely essential technology on this type of machine: an integrated boombox with Bluetooth connection so you can listen to your favorite music.

Already pre-ordered on the brand’s website with a deposit of 90 euros (coincidence? I don’t think so!), and without knowing its exact price, the Tozz Joyce’ 90 should be available in production from March 2024.
