MOSCOW (Reuters) – Belarusian head of state Alexander Lukashenko said he will run again in his country’s presidential election in 2025, state news agency BelTA reported on Sunday.

“Tell them [à l’opposition en exil] that I will run,” Alexander Lukashenko told reporters at a polling station in the parliamentary elections.

“No one, no responsible president would abandon his people who followed him into battle.”

At 69, Alexander Lukashenko has ruled Belarus since 1994 and is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies.

“We are still a year away from the presidential election. A lot of things can change,” he added.

“Naturally, I and all of us, society, will react to the changes that will occur in our society and to the situation in which we approach the election in a year.”
