(Reuters) – The Belarusian army announced on Tuesday the deployment of special forces in three areas near the southern border with Ukraine, while military maneuvers including aviation and artillery units will be organized in parallel in the west of the country.

Russia’s ally, Belarus said in March that its troops were not taking part in what Moscow presents as a “special military operation” in Ukraine, but served as a rear base for sending thousands of Russian troops from the beginning of the offensive launched on 24 February.

Minsk has been complaining for months about seeing NATO countries – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia – regroup soldiers near its borders and has increased the frequency and scale of its military exercises in response.
