BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès announced her resignation from the government on Thursday.
Sophie Wilmès, 47, in office since October 2020 after serving as Prime Minister for just over eleven months, went on leave from her ministerial duties in April to take care of her husband, who is suffering from brain cancer.
“My husband’s illness will be a difficult battle that I want to fight alongside him and alongside our children. My current duties in government would not allow me to do so,” she said in a statement.
