Berlin on Netflix: a masterstroke or a monumental flop for the spin-off of La Casa de Papel?

A spin-off series and prequel to “La Casa de Papel”, “Berlin” arrived on Netflix on December 29. What did subscribers think? We take stock with the ratings of AlloCiné spectators.

Released on Netflix on December 29, Berlin is the new creation by Álex Pina, the father of La Casa de Papel, in collaboration with Esther Martínez Lobato. He takes up the character of Berlin – played with mischief by Pedro Alonso – for a prequel mini-series which tells one of the crazy adventures of this colorful character.

A great romantic before the eternal, Berlin – real name Andrés de Fonollosa – goes to Paris with a crack team to carry out a legendary heist: steal 44 million euros from the city’s largest auction house light.

Planned as a blockbuster after the immense success of La Casa de Papel – which enjoyed an exceptional second life on Netflix after a broadcast that went almost unnoticed on its original channel – Berlin capitalizes on one of the most popular characters of the parent series.

But is this return with fanfare to the taste of early fans? As we write these lines, AlloCiné spectators give it an average rating of 2.9 out of 5 for 214 notes including 56 reviews.

Much of the commentary aligns with the series being disappointing. “Everything is bad in this spin-off. Nothing coherent, neither in the heist nor in the love stories.” regrets Laurence Gauthier.

I was waiting for it a lot, and I was there this morning at 9:01 a.m. (that’s saying something). It’s clearly a disappointment, the characters are barely developed, the music is not as good as in the main series, the secondary actors are average“, confides DoctorPopcorn.

But other spectators seem to find what they’re looking for, like Kim Keita: “Nice spin-off, certainly it’s not La Casa de Papel but it’s nice to find Berlin and the atmosphere again.

There is real enthusiasm like for Lyah: “Big crush on this excellent spin-off of La Casa de Papel. It’s light, rhythmic and ingenious. The characters are very likeable and well played.
