The head of the Russian investigative committee, Alexander Bastrykin, has instructed his agency to initiate criminal proceedings over an alleged Russophobic statement by US Senator Lindsey Graham. “In a video circulated online, US Senator Graham, meeting with the President of Ukraine, spoke about US financial involvement in the killing of Russian citizens,” the agency said on its Telegram channel. This statement will now be legally evaluated.
The background is a statement published on Friday by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social networks Video from his meeting with Graham. In the conversation, Zelenskyy thanked the United States for its help in helping Ukrainians defend their freedom. In Russia, Graham’s answer in particular caused a sensation: According to the Russian media, he is said to have said: “And the Russians were dying. The best money we ever spent” – roughly translated: “And the Russians died. Our best investment of all time .”
However, the word “dying” cannot be heard clearly. There is therefore an argument online about whether he didn’t say instead that the Russians were done – “done”. There is also a break between the two sentences because the video was cut at this point.
Before the criminal proceedings were initiated, the Russian leadership had already sharply criticized Graham’s alleged statement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke of the “disgrace” that such senators represented for the United States; Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said US investments caused World War II and the Holocaust. Now the USA financed “the neo-Nazi Kiev regime”. Ukraine’s constant comparisons with Nazi Germany serve to justify its own war of aggression against the neighboring country.
