“TV total” to “Matrix”, Thomas Gottschalk to Boba Fett. Nostalgia based on the motto: Everything was better in the past, even the fictional future.

Nostalgia in the show, TV and film business can have many and mostly English names. Remake, reboot or revival. Spin-off or special. Comeback or reunion. Not to mention a very special resurrection at the end of the year. It is no coincidence that nostalgic television is booming at the time of the never-ending corona pandemic. This was demonstrated most clearly in the special edition of “Wetten, dass ..?” last Saturday, which incidentally also celebrated the return of ABBA after 40 years.

The minute-long applause to standing ovations from the studio audience from Nuremberg was not just for showmaster returnees Thomas Gottschalk (71). The memory of the supposedly “good old days” before Corona, which he symbolized, was also cheered. And so frenetic that program director Dr. Norbert Himmler (50), when asked by the news agency spot on news, said that “in view of the great response” they will “think” about further issues. But not only the ZDF is looking for its future in the dazzling past, as the TV program of the following week immediately proves.

“Nipple” and “Zonk”

The “Wetten, dass ..?” Comeback was announced well in advance. Private broadcaster ProSieben, on the other hand, literally conjured the return of one of its cult formats out of the hat. It was only last Monday (November 8th) that the previously circulating rumors were confirmed that there would be a new edition of “TV total” – and that already from this Wednesday (November 10th) and at prime time at 8:15 pm.

Only that Stefan Raab (55) doesn’t press his dreaded “nipples” to the sounds of the show band Heavytones, tarnishes the feeling of nostalgia. Instead of Raab, cabaret artist Sebastian Pufpaff (45) will take apart the German TV landscape once a week for the time being.

To the traditional presenter of the 90s show “Go all out!” However, fans don’t have to do without. In this year’s “Celebrity Big Brother” season, Jörg Draeger (76) impressively demonstrated that he has not lost any of his showmaster qualities. The reward: From November 26th, 2021, Sat.1 will be donating three special editions of “Go on the whole!” in each case at prime time, in which he wants to give the participants the consolation prize “Zonk” again.

Eternal friends and bounty hunters

Linear television is not the only one to find salvation in nostalgia. It was only in May of this year that we were honored by all the main actors of the sitcom as well as numerous special guests in the big “Friends” reunion. Together with Jennifer Aniston (52), Courteney Cox (57), David Schwimmer (55) and Co., viewers around the world indulged in the comfortably warm, unforgettable moments that the six TV friends have given us over the years.

There is even a whole season this December of the “Sex and the City” successor “And Just Like That …”. The series spin-off follows once again Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker, 56), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon, 55) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis, 56), who are now in their 50s. Only Kim Cattrall (65) has to be done without on return.

The “Star Wars” series “The Book of Boba Fett” will also draw from a good deal of nostalgia. The bounty hunter had a contemplative part in the original trilogy and actually found an inglorious, interim ending in “The Return of the Jedi Knights” from 1983. Nevertheless, over the years he has become the franchise’s absolute fan favorite and will be rewarded with his own series on Disney + on December 29, 2021. As in “The Mandalorian”, Temuera Morrison (60) will slip into the role of the title character, who was also involved in the prequel trilogy (episode I-III).

Back to the “Matrix”

The cinema will also live from nostalgia in the coming weeks, months and certainly years. In “Halloween Kills” Jamie Lee Curtis (62) has to fight back against Michael Myers on the screen. Another retro festival will soon start with Ghostbusters: Legacy “(November 18th). And on December 23rd, Keanu Reeves (57) logs into the digital illusory world for the fourth time in” The Matrix Resurrections ” “Scream 5” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are already in the starting blocks for the coming year, and a bright future – thanks to the past.
