Thanks to the huge success of ChatGPTthe ambitious project of talking to deceased people via a metaverse would have gained several years.

Arthur Sychov, founder of Somnium Space, has indeed indicated that the integration of the OpenAI tool into its metaverse has drastically accelerated the development of the mode quite rightly called ” Live Forever “, his heart project.

Chat with dead people

Last April, Arthur Sychov presented the mode Live Forever, inspired by the death of his father. The idea behind this project was to allow interaction with loved ones or other deceased people within the Somnium Space metaverse.

At the time, the man predicted that the culmination of the mode would not come for at least five years. But that was without counting on the extremely rapid development of conversational intelligences such as ChatGPT. Reinforced by this kind of tool, Arthur Sycov now believes that Live Forever should be operational within two years, or even sooner.

While others have developed a chatbot allowing you to talk with yourself as a child, here is a new adaptation of the many applications of artificial intelligence. Live Forever indeed intends to reproduce exactly their voice, their reactions and their gestures through a virtual avatar.

Unlike other metaverses like (randomly) Horizon Worlds, Somnium Space ranks as one of the most advanced in the field. It already has a 3D space fully compatible with VR headsets, with great autonomy allowing users to build their own experiences.

User-initiated discovery

It is moreover at the initiative of one of these users that the potential of ChatGPT was discovered to accelerate the development of Live Forever. Responding to the pseudonym of Artific, it has indeed worked in data science and offers the rental of part of its space in Space Somnium for other users.

At Artific’s request, ChatGPT itself came up with a visibly compelling plan to be incorporated into the project, to which the user made some adjustments. The next step, according to Arthur Sychov, is to allow the AI to store the recorded data, to enable the most natural conversations possible.

A process that could be facilitated within a metaverse such as Somnium Space, where the data feeding the AI is legion. Beyond the fact of chatting with deceased people, the implementation of an AI in this virtual universe would also allow the development of real artificial assistants, with their own personalities.

Artific has already installed virtual employees in its space. Between artificial intelligences evolving in a metaverse and a Cortana at the Halo, so there seems to be only one step. And at the rate at which artificial intelligences are evolving, such a step could be closer than we hope or fear.
