ChatGPT is a great tool, but you have to know how to use it with caution. It is, for example, strongly discouraged to submit confidential information to it. And it’s not Samsung who will tell you otherwise.
Samsung Electronics employees leaked confidential company data using ChatGPT, reports Korean media Economist.
At least three ChatGPT-related data leaks
According to the publication, the group had authorized engineers from the Samsung Semiconductor branch, in charge of the design of electronic components such as RAM, storage, processors or photo sensors, to use ChatGPT to correct problems of source code.
To accomplish its task, ChatGPT of course needed to know this source code, otherwise it could not improve it. Samsung therefore knowingly revealed the source code of a new chatbot program, critical content that is now kept on the servers of OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT and its GPT-4 language model.
And that’s not all: several other incidents relating to ChatGPT have been observed at Samsung. Test models used to identify defective chips and then to optimize them were also subjected to artificial intelligence. In another case, the Naver Clova application, also based on AI, was used to automatically produce a document from the recording of a meeting. This document was then submitted to ChatGPT to generate a presentation of said meeting.

Samsung has decided to restrict ChatGPT within its premises in order to limit the risk of further leaks of confidential information. The firm does not rule out completely blocking the service if other accidents occur. The multinational would then not be the first to take such measures, already in force at JP Morgan and Verizon.
According to the same source, Samsung plans to develop its own artificial intelligence platform similar to ChatGPT, but for internal use only.
