As expected, the 37-year-old from Graubünden is retiring from top-class sport after this season. In Switzerland, she was a pioneer in biathlon.

With Selina Gasparin, the most successful Swiss biathlete is retiring after this season. That she would not add another season at the age of 37 comes as no surprise. The Engadin native had her debut in the World Cup in 2005. After more than 300 starts in the World Cup, she gave her farewell performance at the highest level at the season finale at Holmenkollen in Oslo on Saturday.

«After this Olympic season, I see the ideal time to end my long journey as an active biathlete. I will remember a multitude of fantastic, unforgettable experiences on and off the trails and shooting ranges,” says the 37-year-old. She looks back on her career with satisfaction and is happy to have contributed to the development of biathlon in Switzerland.

First Swiss biathlon medalist at the Olympics

Gasparin’s greatest success is now 8 years ago: At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the woman from Graubünden shone with silver in the individual and was the first Swiss biathlete to win an Olympic medal. This was joined by 2 World Cup victories – both in sprints at the end of 2013 – as well as 5 other podium finishes.

The now mother of two was a pioneer in Swiss biathlon. In the early years, Gasparin was a lone fighter before other Swiss women established themselves in biathlon with her sisters Elisa and Aita and Lena Häcki.

Selina Gasparin will have her last appearance as an active biathlete at the beginning of April at the Swiss Championships in Realp.
