US President Joe Biden has again threatened Russia with “high economic costs” if it invades Ukraine. Biden and France’s head of state Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed “their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine” in a telephone call, the White House said on Wednesday evening (local time). Both have therefore spoken about coordinated action and consequences in the event of an invasion. They wanted to keep in touch to discuss a “comprehensive concept for overcoming the problems”. Macron had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin twice on the phone in the past few days.

According to the Élysée Palace, the 45-minute exchange was also held in view of Macron’s further telephone calls planned for Thursday with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Macron and Biden agreed that it was important to build on the progress made in the Normandy format at deliberations by representatives of Russia and Ukraine last week under Franco-German moderation. The dialogue on the implementation of the Minsk agreements on the situation in Donbass must be continued.
