The well-known Benedictine market is celebrating its 75th birthday this year. The festival takes place in October. There is a beer sleigh ride, schools are invited. The market is much more than just farmer’s bread and colorful vegetables. True to style, he manages the balancing act between long-established standlers and award-winning cuisine. In recent years of generational change, it has blossomed into new popularity and is a true declaration of love for the region. Every Thursday and Saturday is market day. There are now 18 restaurateurs. Feasting at the market is also very important. The colorful variety reigns, tasting is important. Farmers sell their products, you can get everything from cheese, sausage, chanterelles, herbs to fish. From the early hours of the morning there is the possibility to buy the groceries directly from the producer. Delicacies from all over Carinthia and the neighboring regions of Friuli and Slovenia are offered on market days. The scent of fresh herbs and lovely flowers is in the air. A happy “Bon Giorno”, “Dobro jutro” and “Servus” sound across the square. “A highlight are the six after-work events. Thousands of visitors are guests every Friday,” says Mayor Christian Scheider, who is also the market officer. The city is currently investigating the history of the market. Nobody knew that the big birthday was coming up this year. Incidentally, there is a change in the position of market coordinator: Alexander Adamitsch, who was previously the contact person for standlers 25 hours a week, is changing to food supervision. Martina Derhaschnig, who was most recently responsible for the market in city marketing and knows the customs well, could be his successor. The application period ends on September 15th.
