Alexandra Gregus was the first woman to win “The Biggest Loser” – she lost 51.4 percent of her body weight. In her new book, she reveals her best tips.

“My name is Alexandra and I weigh 103.4 kilos.”

When I had to pronounce this sentence at the beginning of the TV show The Biggest Loser, I felt shame and anger. At that moment, dressed only in sweatpants and a lime-colored bustier, I was standing on a large scale in a wine warehouse in Andalusia. It was the moment when the starting weight was determined for each candidate in the famous weight-loss competition. Although only the other candidates and the coaches were present at the weighing, I had the feeling that I could feel the looks of millions of TV viewers on my shapeless body. Glances of sensationalism, horror and disgust.

So begins Alexandra Gregus’ review of her first day on “The Biggest Loser”, which she now reports on in her new book “My Better Half”. The moment she stood on the scales in Andalusia, all she knew was that she had a long and hard road ahead of her. But every effort was worth it! Alex not only became the first woman ever to win the show, but also set a second record right away: She recorded the highest weight loss to date with a total of 51.4 percent of her body weight.

Alex’s best weight loss tips

Since Alex himself has all the ups and downs of losing weight behind him, Of course, she also reveals in the book how she stayed on the ball after the camp and stayed motivated. Here are seven of their best tips:

1. Get all the help you can get

Above all, do you find it difficult to really get up and go to sport? Then negotiate appointments with a trainer at the gym or meet a training partner on site. So the “appointments” get something binding and you don’t cancel so quickly. Is your problem more of having cakes or sweets standing around at work? Ask to put things somewhere where you can’t see them – your colleagues will certainly understand.

2. Accept that you will never eat the way you used to eat again

Nobody has to go without burgers and pizza for the rest of their life – but things like that should be a tasty exception and not the rule. Live with the fact that you will need a healthier diet for the rest of your life if you want to lose and eventually maintain your weight.

Anyone who is fat once will always be prone to gain weight again. Because: Diet does not reduce the number of fat cells in the body – It increases until about the age of 20 and then stays the same. So whoever eats unhealthily again after successfully losing weight, replenishes the fat cells directly and the unloved kilos come back.

3. A healthy diet does not automatically mean a low-calorie diet

Even if it sounds strange, a healthy diet is no lower in calories than an unhealthy diet. For example, a slice of white bread has fewer calories than a slice of whole grain bread. But the whole grain bread is metabolized longer in the body and therefore keeps you full longer. In addition, it does not cause the insulin level to rise so much – a high level of insulin favors the accumulation of fat in the body. That is why it is important to keep an eye on your own calorie intake, even if you are actually eating healthy foods such as nuts.

4. Learn the handbook to eat sensible servings

Instead of weighing everything, it is much easier to determine portions with the help of the hand gauge. It refers to a normal main course with meat. The portion should weigh around 500 grams in total. The formula for this is:

200 grams of meat + 200 grams of vegetables + 100 grams of carbohydrates (e.g. rice or pasta)

To get the right size, just use the palm of your hand:

You can also take a little more of the vegetables.

5. Don’t expect miracles as your skin regresses

The fact is: if you lose a lot, you will have to deal with excess skin for a long time. If you were overweight, your tissue structure is extremely slack or even torn – You can therefore simply not expect miracles in the regression. In some cases, surgery is necessary. Otherwise, a vitamin-rich and sugar-free diet and the consumption of plenty of water can also help – this supports the connective tissue and the regeneration of the skin.
