Bill Gates is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world – so he knows how it’s done. Three pieces of wisdom he shared with the world.

Bill Gates is one of the richest, most influential people in the world: As one of the main founders of Microsoft, one of the most economically successful companies in the world in recent decades, he has earned several billion euros and has been shaping one of the most important industries of our time for years. The entrepreneur was married to his wife Melinda, with whom he has three children, for almost 30 years before they divorced.

In view of such a balance sheet it seems almost indisputable: Bill Gates knows the way to success. And fortunately he is not a person who keeps his knowledge to himself. The following quotes from the entrepreneur are particularly striking.

Bill Gates: Are these wisdoms the secret of his success?

1. Being able to fail is more valuable than achieving goals

There is probably hardly anyone who has never heard how valuable and good it is to fail and make mistakes. Many psychologists advise that setbacks should be viewed as mere experience through which we gain information. Bill Gates seems to share this opinion because he says: “It’s nice to celebrate success, but it’s more important to heed the lessons of failure.” So he sees greater value in the lesson of failure than in the joy of success.

2. Everyone goes their own way

It is in our nature that we orient ourselves to our fellow human beings and compare ourselves to them in order to classify, identify and differentiate ourselves. But comparisons with others are only healthy and beneficial for us as long as they strengthen our awareness of ourselves and our individuality without throwing us off our path. This is what Bill Gates alludes to when he says: “Compare yourself to other people […] if you do, you are insulting yourself.” According to the entrepreneur, if we compare ourselves without being aware of our individuality and our unique characteristics and qualities, we are not doing ourselves justice.

3. Everyone is responsible for their own life

We have no control over the conditions with which we begin our lives. But how we conduct it and end it one day is, at least to some extent, in our hands. At least that’s what Bill Gates seems to think, for he is said to have said, “It’s not your fault if you were born poor. But it’s your fault if you die poor.” Whether the entrepreneur refers to money in the narrower sense or to poverty and wealth more broadly is open, but it is up to us to interpret it. In any case, one thing is certain: as humans, we are among the most adaptable creatures on earth. We can survive even adverse circumstances, and after sitting in the darkest hole, at another point in time we can feel like the happiest person in the world – as long as we don’t give up.
