Investing.com – According to information obtained by Reuters, US prosecutors are divided on a possible indictment of Binance for money laundering.
The Reuters report indicates that there is a division among US DOJ prosecutors involved in the investigation into Binance’s compliance with US anti-money laundering laws.
Some prosecutors reportedly believe they have compelling evidence to act aggressively against Binance and file criminal charges against its executives, including founder Changpeng Zhao, nicknamed “CZ.”
However, Reuters sources also said other prosecutors have pleaded for restraint pending additional evidence.
Recall that this is an investigation that began in 2018, but which undoubtedly took on new importance following the shock of the bankruptcy of FTX.
The report also states that Binance defense attorneys have reportedly held meetings in recent months with the Department of Justice including in regards to potential plea deals.
Note that this information seems to have an impact on , Binance’s cryptocurrency, which is currently falling by 4.6%, while it is only losing 1.14%. The , i native token of the Trust Wallet crypto wallet, Open Source software which was acquired by Binance in 2018 is even more affected, plunge of more than 10.6%.
Binance defends itself, “Reuters is wrong again”
In what appears to be a response to the Reuters article, Binance’s Global Head of Intelligence and Investigations, Tigran Gambaryan, claimed that the crypto platform has, since the start of the year, “responded to more than 47 000 law enforcement requests”, increased “security and compliance headcount by more than 500%”, participated “in more than 70 cybercrime workshops with global law enforcement” and “is became the first blockchain and crypto company to join the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA).”
The official (NYSE:) Binance Twitter account meanwhile posted a scathing message, “Reuters is wrong again,” adding, “Now they’re attacking our amazing law enforcement team. A team we’re incredibly proud of. – it has made cryptography safer for all of us”.
