Bischofshofen avalanche – This is the situation with the ski jumping facilities in Montafon

After the avalanche on the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze, Bischofshofen is fighting against the cancellation of the final of the Four Hills Tournament on January 6th. What does it look like in the Montafon ski jumping center? Could something similar to what happened in Salzburg happen here? The “Krone” asked.

What happened in Bischofshofen? A large pile of snow that had been deposited on the slope for preparation and had not yet been distributed became too heavy due to heavy rain and high temperatures, came loose and tore the safety net underneath into the run. VSV sports director Christoph Kraxner feels for the Salzburg organizers; the drama was not easy for him to avert. “If the circumstances are really that adverse, that can happen,” he says. “A lot of work and effort.” But that is rather unlikely on the ski jumps in Tschagguns. “Because they are smaller, work is done from the bottom up. This means that if there is a large mass of snow in one spot, it is already down. Nevertheless, the snow net must be worked with incredible care. At our ski jump there are rows of concrete anchors that run every five meters across the entire width. The net is attached to them with around a thousand knots. There are seven power supplies because a single one would have too much load. I estimate that there are a few more in Bischofshofen due to the size of the jump. That’s a lot of work and effort,” explains Kraxner. Lack of snow is a bigger problem. So you don’t have to worry about that in Montafon. But another big one. “The snow was enough to prepare the small jumps for the youngsters, that was a priority,” said Kraxner, “but we don’t have a depot, next week it will be very critical if it doesn’t get colder again. We actually want to get the 100-meter jump ready, but we’re currently missing several hundred cubic meters of snow.”
