Black owned businesses
We should know these 5 labels urgently
Where does the money go that we spend on our clothes? This question has been more present than ever since last year at the latest. That's why we'd like to introduce you to five of the coolest labels that you should definitely consider on your next shopping trip.
Black-owned businesses – what is it anyway? Actually exactly what the name says. Brands founded and run by People Of Color. And no matter how big or small our shopping budget is, with every purchase we not only have to decide what is next in our closet or in our beauty case, but also which labels we support financially and which brands are given the opportunity to continue to grow.
Actively paying attention to which corporations and designers we want to support seems more important than ever in these times (#supportyourlocals). And even if the last year triggered a lot of movement in relation to racism and the representation of the black community, the so-called "black-owned businesses" still have a difficult time with regard to visibility in our everyday life.
Daily Paper
If you are looking for the perfect loungewear, the fashion label Daily Paper is the right address. The Amsterdam-based label was founded by three childhood friends: Hussein Suleiman, Jefferson Osei and Abderrahmane Trabsini. Together, the trio made it their mission to combine their African roots with modern design. The result was a women and menswear collection that not only impresses with casual hoodies but also with very special cuts.
Zashadu
The bag label by designer Zainab Ashadu relies on elegant designs and sustainable materials. In addition to trendy shapes and colors, the focus is also on the unique and traditional story behind the bags. All pieces are made in collaboration with local small businesses and farmers in Lagos, Nigeria. From bright colors to trendy animal patterns – everyone will find what they are looking for here.
Afro curl
Finding the right products for curly hair can be frustrating. After numerous visits to the drugstore, Anna Baltruschat, whose father is from Ghana, had had enough. In 2016 she decided to create her own care range, especially for Afro hair and extreme curls. The result was: Afrolocke. The brand promises easier combing and better care. The best? All Afrolocke products are free from parabens, silicones, sulfates, paraffins and are not tested on animals. What more do you want?
Aissata Ibrahima
"I want to create fashion that everyone feels comfortable in" – that is the motto of designer Aissata Ibrahima. With her creative designs full of bright colors, she definitely seems to have succeeded in this mission. The label plays with the mix of masculine cuts and feminine details. This creates luxurious pieces with that special something. And let's be honest: how cool is this trench choat, if you please?
Uoma Beauty
The look at the color selection of many make-up brands is usually very sobering. Often you will find the colors "light", "medium" and "dark" there. Unfortunately, many brands don't seem to be aware that these three color nuances are definitely not enough. It's different with Uoma Beauty. With her make-up brand, founder Sharon Chuter created a line with all the products that make the beauty heart beat faster. For her foundations and concealers in particular, she relies on a wide range of colors that really make everyone happy and happy.
