The next chapter of the franchise Blade Runner finally sees the end of the tunnel. After months of interruptions following the Hollywood strike, production of the series Blade Runner 2099 — scheduled for the Prime Video streaming platform — is finally preparing to start filming, and has just found the director of its first two episodes.
By the director of ShÅ gun
And the lucky one is Jonathan van Tulleken. In the business for over 15 years, he has already directed episodes of Misfits, Upload, The Changeling or even from the series ShÅ gun, available February 27 on Disney+. A director accustomed to large productions, who will have his work cut out for him to carry the inaugural episodes of Blade Runner 2099 on the screen, and set the tone, rhythm and energy of the program.
He replaces Jeremy Podeswa (Game Of Thrones), who was originally slated to sign the pilot episode of the series before having to pull out due to production delays caused by the stage strike Narists. Originally, the series was to be filmed in Belfast in the summer of 2023. Filming will finally begin in April in Prague.
As a reminder, this is based on the universe of the original novel by Philip K. Dick Do Androids dream of electric sheep? published in 1968. A book which saw a first adaptation by Ridley Scott in 1982, with Harrison Ford in the cast.
A failure upon release, the film gained cult status over time, leading to the production of the sequel Blade Runner 2049released in 2017. Unfortunately, the latter was not successful at the box office either, with only $259 million collected worldwide, for a budget of $150 million.
Created by Silka Luisa (Shining Girls, Halo), produced by Ridley Scott and written notably by Tom Spezialy (The Leftovers), this mini-series Blade Runner 2099 composed of ten episodes still remains very mysterious. We do not yet know what it will tell precisely, apart from the fact that it takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049.
No release date has yet been announced for Blade Runner 2099. In the meantime, however, you can discover the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotusavailable on the Crunchyroll platform.
