Blowing in your cartridges, a tenacious urban legend
In the 80s/90s, blowing into a Super Nintendo, Mega Drive or Game Boy game cartridge that refused to launch tended to bring the latter back to life. Failing that, some even went so far as to inflate their lungs to also blow into the port of their console. However, it has since been proven that this practice does not “repair” the cartridges, but that it can also deteriorate the metal pins.
In 2023, if the Xbox and other PlayStations obviously do not suffer from this problem, the Nintendo Switch, for its part, uses good old cartridges. Also, it may happen that a game does not launch immediately, once inserted into the dedicated port. And you guessed it, old habits die hard. Some therefore tend to continue to blow…into it.
Nintendo asks you to stop (to breathe)
A phenomenon taken very seriously by Nintendo, which recently split a tweet that could not be more official to remind Nintendo Switch owners that it is strongly advised not to touch / blow inside the cartridge port.
Nintendo specifies in a second tweet: If dust gets into the cartridge port, use a vacuum cleaner to remove it. Don’t blow into it. Saliva can stick to the terminals and cause the connectors to rust or corrode. Moreover, if you do not have a vacuum cleaner, you will be advised to use a dusting spray.
