After nine years of good and loyal service, it is time for the BMW i3 to leave the catalog of the German manufacturer. Its production will cease in July 2022.

BMW says goodbye to one of its iconic electric cars

A small page that turns in the history of BMW. Its very first electric car will soon leave the production lines after nine years of good and loyal service. Foreshadowed by a concept car unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, the BMW i3 began rolling out of the factory in 2013.

The spokesperson for the firm from across the Rhine who confirmed the news to Coach gives more details as to the group’s schedule: the latter is counting on the end of July to definitively stop the production of its electric city car. By this deadline, BMW will estimate to have assembled and sold more than 250,000 units.

No official successor

The BMW i3 will not officially have a successor. This observation also seems to be confirmed with regard to the intentions of the manufacturer, which plans to launch two new electric vehicles in 2022 belonging on the one hand to the compact SUV segment (iX1), and on the other to sedans (i7).

The company will also adjust its industrial strategy to compensate for the void left by the BMW i3. This reorganization will in particular provide the third generation of the Mini Countryman with better resources with a view to its production scheduled for the second half of 2022.

The departure for other horizons of the BMW i3 in no way hinders the group’s electrification strategy. On the contrary, as the spokesperson insisted. “By the end of the year, the BMW Group will have six electric models on the market: this number will increase to 13 in 2023“, he says.

2023 promises to be busy

This implies that the year 2023 should be rich in new products and launches, in order to boost the company’s sales and occupy a better place in a European market largely dominated by Tesla (in sales volumes). Although the 2022 and 2023 vintages could shake things up given the novelties to come.

The BMW i3 therefore gives way to new machines ready to do battle in an increasingly competitive sector. The one that underwent a deep exterior restyling in 2017, embellished with a new battery and a more efficient S version the same year, has therefore done its time to pass the torch to its elders.
