FARNBOROUGH (Agefi-Dow Jones)–Boeing is preparing to ramp up production of the 787 Dreamliner once it is cleared to resume deliveries by U.S. regulators, a person familiar with the matter said.
The resumption of deliveries could take place as early as this summer.
The aircraft manufacturer should quickly produce 3 of these jumbo jets each month, instead of only one currently, before increasing its rates again to 5 per month within a period of around 6 months, said the source interviewed on Wednesday in margin of the Farnborough Airshow, near London.
Subsequent production rates will depend on demand for the device.
Boeing has been unable to deliver Dreamliners to customers for most of the past two years due to production delays and regulatory hurdles. Its engineers notably had to respond to several production defects detected on the devices.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not said when it expects to conclude its investigation into the 787. Boeing Civil Aviation Branch Director Stan Deal said this week deliveries could resume “very soon.” quickly” once the green light from the FAA has been obtained.
