Bohemian Rhapsody, Dexter Fletcher’s biopic about the life of Freddie Mercury, took eight years to see the light of day. But for what reasons? Télé Star explains to you.
It took eight years to see Bohemian Rhapsody on the big screen. While the project was started in 2010, it was finally released in 2018. Initially, Sacha Baron Cohen was chosen to play Freddie Mercury. But he left the project in July 2013 after disagreements with members of the group Queen. Following his departure, several names were then floated before GK Films, a British-American film and television production company, announced that British actor and director Dexter Fletcher would be part of the project. But again, it fell through.
It wasn’t until 2015 that GK Films considered christening the film Bohemian Rhapsody. One year later ; the shooting is then announced for the beginning of the year 2017 with the director Bryan Singer and the American actor of Egyptian origin Rami Malek in the title role. Only here, there was again a problem. After Thanksgiving, the director never returned to filming. For lack of professionalism, he was fired. “I wanted nothing more than to finish this project and honor the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox wouldn’t allow me to because I needed to temporarily prioritize my health and that of my family. close (…) The rumors that my unexpected departure was due to an argument with Rami Malek are false. Although at times we had creative differences on the set, he and I managed to put them behind us and we continued to make the movie together until Thanksgiving.” he had explained. Finally, it is Dexter Fletcher, who was on the project in 2013, who took the controls of the biopic.
Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody
At the 2019 Academy Awards, the film received four Oscars: Best Actor for Rami Malek, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing and Editing. One reward has been controversial, that of editing. “As soon as I see the scene of Queen’s meeting with John Reid, I want to hide. It’s not my aesthetic. If they make a long version of the film, where I could add a few scenes that have been cut, I will completely modify this one”even admitted the technician.
