Bombed with Storm Shadow?: Russia: Ukraine damages Chonhar Bridge to Crimea

Bombarded with Storm Shadow?
Russia: Ukraine damages Chonhar Bridge to Crimea

The Chonhar Bridge connects the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula with the southern Kherson region. Ukraine is said to have launched an attack on the bridge during the night, reports the Russian governor of Crimea. Images show a large crater.

According to Russian sources, a bridge to Crimea was damaged in a Ukrainian attack. The Chonhar Bridge, which connects the Moscow-annexed peninsula with the southern Kherson region in southern Ukraine, was hit during the night, Crimea’s Russian governor, Sergey Aksyonov, said on Telegram. There were no victims, the damage is currently being assessed, he explained and called on the population to calm down.

The Russian governor in Cherson, on the other hand, spoke of several damaged bridges. The Kiev armed forces “bombed civilian infrastructure: bridges on the administrative border between the Kherson region and Crimea near Chongar,” said Governor Vladimir Saldo.

He posted a photo of a bridge showing a deep crater on a roadway. According to “initial estimates,” Ukraine would have used British Storm Shadow missiles, he added.

Ukraine is currently trying to recapture Russian-occupied areas in a counter-offensive. The Crimean peninsula in southern Ukraine, which was annexed in 2014, serves as an important logistical base for the Russian armed forces. In October 2022, an explosion severely damaged the Kerch Bridge – the only bridge directly connecting Crimea to Russia.
