Boris Johnson surprised Angela Merkel when she visited the UK with a swipe at the German championship.
For many German football fans, the sting is still deep. Not only that the national team of coach Joachim Löw (61) was kicked out of the European Championship in the round of 16 – this was also due to a bitter defeat against England. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson (57) did not miss the opportunity during Angela Merkel’s (66) current visit to Great Britain to put a little more salt on the wound.
Broken football tradition
About the final meeting with Merkel as incumbent Chancellor Johnson said: “I am delighted to welcome Angela here on the last of her 22 visits in 16 years as Chancellor. (…) During your tenure, Angela, it was certainly a tradition for England to lose to Germany at international football tournaments. I am you very grateful that you broke with this tradition – just this once. “
Merkel did not allow herself a direct verbal return coach for this joke and remained serious. She only came back to the subject of football later and with warning words. In view of the pandemic, she is worried about the British plans to play the remaining games of the EM at Wembley Stadium in front of 60,000 spectators.
