Just go to the ATM and get fresh cash: In some cities this might not work at the moment. The reason for this is a strike in the money and value sector. The unions are already recommending that citizens have enough cash.
There are more than 60,000 ATMs in Germany. That should be enough for a secure and close supply of cash – assuming no strike intervenes. But that is exactly what is happening in parts of northern Germany.
Strike affects cash dispensing at ATMs in Lower Saxony and Bremen
Since Monday, the “Verdi” union has called on employees in the money and valuables sector in Lower Saxony and Bremen to go on a warning strike (Source: T-Online). A total of eight companies are on strike, the strike is expected to last two days. The central rally will take place this Tuesday in Hanover. A Verdi spokesman expects up to 300 participants.
The companies of The money and valuables branch are responsible, among other things, for supplying cash to ATMs. Verdi therefore recommended that citizens have enough cash to avoid shortages during the strike.
With the strike, the union wants to put pressure on the employers in the current collective bargaining for the nationwide around 11,000 employees in the money and valuables sector. Among other things, Verdi is demanding higher hourly wages of between EUR 16.19 and EUR 20.60. According to the employers, the offer provides for “effective hourly basic wage increases”, which are between 10.75 percent and 13.7 percent depending on the region and are to take place in two steps. The term should be 22 months.
