  • Kay Melliger (22) had his license plate «SO 73» stolen over the holidays.

  • Because it is now advertised in the search system, it is automatically blocked for 15 years.

  • The man from Solothurn is now offering a reward of CHF 1,000 for evidence of the perpetrator.

Kay Melliger, son of the famous Swiss show jumper Willi Melliger (1953-2018), still can’t believe it: his license plate “SO 73” was stolen from him in Arosa over the holidays. “I parked my Mercedes right in front of my mother’s apartment. On the night of Sunday, strangers tore off the signs, ”said the 22-year-old. Melliger can only speculate about the motivation of the perpetrators: “Maybe it was drunken young people, maybe it was pure malevolence.”

“SO 73” is now written out in the Ripol police search system, as confirmed by the Solothurn canton police. This means that the license plate is automatically blocked for 15 years. As two vehicles with the same identification cannot be on the road, the number cannot be requested again for the time being.

12,500 francs paid

For the man from Solothurn, the license plate that he bought about four years ago has no deeper meaning: “I just wanted to please myself with a low number.” For this, however, he reached deep into his pocket: “I spent 12,500 francs on the sign.”

Melliger is now offering a reward of CHF 1,000 for evidence of the perpetrator. But he is not very optimistic: “The chances that I will get the signs back will probably not be too great.” If he has to apply for a new number, it will probably not be that deep: “After such an incident, the motivation to spend so much money again is rather low.”

Update: Kay Melliger’s license plates have now been found.
