After a resounding debut at $536 million worldwide, the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon confirms its success during its second weekend of operation in the United States. Barbie is approaching a billion dollars raised worldwide, while Oppenheimer reached the 400 million mark.

With 93 new millions collected, Barbie today peaks at $351 million in the United States, and is down just 42.6% in viewership from last week, an extraordinarily slight drop.

This allows Greta Gerwig’s film to sign the 7th best second weekend in history in the United States, behind The Avengers ($103M), Jurassic World ($106M), Black Panther ($111M), Avengers: Infinity War ($114M), Avengers: Endgame ($147M) and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($149M)… but ahead Spider-Man: No Way Home ($84M) and Super Mario Bros, the movie ($92M). Impressive.

Barbie confirms that it is not a simple marketing success, and that the public is there. The film with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling already peaks at 774 million dollars worldwide, and the billion looks like a mere formality. At this rate, the adaptation of the Mattel toy should easily dethrone Super Mario Bros, the movie (1.3 billion) to become the biggest global hit of 2023.

Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan signs an impressive film, but one that lacks heart

The journey is similar for the biopic of Christopher Nolan. With a drop in its audience of 44 percent, Oppenheimer rakes in 46.2 million during its second weekend and reaches 174 million dollars on American soil.

Worldwide, the film reached the symbolic mark of 400 million and exceeded two previous films by the English director: tenet ($360 million) and Batman Begins ($356 million). At this rate, Oppenheimer should easily pass by Dunkirk (2017) and its 512 million, and can dream of going for the 647 millionInterstellarreleased in 2014. Difficult, but not impossible.

And behind “Barbenheimer”… the rest of the ranking shares the crumbs. The haunted mansion is in 3rd place with only $24.2 million. A half-hearted start if he wants to compensate for his budget (150 million)… and a new flop for Disney in 2023, after Indiana Jones 5 And Elementary.

Another victim of the phenomenon, Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. The seventh adventure of Ethan Hunt gleans only 10.7 million dollars for its 3rd weekend and stalls at 139.2 million on American soil. If the total worldwide (448 million dollars) is more reassuring, this should not allow Paramount to recover its costs, the titanic budget of the film amounting to 291 million dollars. A resounding fiasco for the franchise.
