Movie theaters can say “thank you” to Kung Fu Panda 4 And Dune: part two. The two films confirmed their success at the American box office, with Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster even approaching the highly symbolic mark of half a billion dollars raked in worldwide. We take stock.
Dune 2 on the way to the billion?
2024 has its first successes. While Kung Fu Panda 4 raking in an additional $30 million for its second weekend, down only 48% compared to the first, the new opus of the franchise stands out as the family event at the start of the year.
The Dreamworks animated film has (already) passed the symbolic mark of 100 million generated on American soil. He should easily do better in the United States than Kung Fu Panda 2 (165 million) and Kung Fu Panda 3 (143 million).
If he has to be satisfied with second place again this week, Dune 2 is not to be complained about with 29.1 million dollars collected this weekend. A nice score which allows it to pass the 200 million mark in the United States, and to approach that of half a billion worldwide. Moreover, as we write these lines, Denis Villeneuve’s film will undoubtedly have passed it.
With its release in Japan on March 15, Dune: part two has landed in all of its major markets, and is expected to see another boost in viewers next week.
The film got off to a good start in China (36 million dollars in one week), in Great Britain (32.8 million) and in France (25 million), and has officially just surpassed the score of the first film (433 million).
At this rate, the billion generated worldwide seems an achievable horizon, even if the road still looks long. The release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire next April 3 should notably put a stop to the sandy blockbuster, by taking away its precious IMAX screens and its spectators eager for a great show.
In the rest of the box office, Mark Wahlberg takes third place with his new film Arthur the King. A story of friendship between man and dog which only raked in 7.5 million for its launch. A new snub for the actor, who no longer seems to attract crowds when he is alone at the head of the bill. His latest successes are Uncharted with Tom Holland (2022) and Transformers: The Last Knight (2017).
