Apple may be the king of smartphones, but it still has a way to go to conquer Hollywood. Argyle, his last major production, got off to a disastrous start at the American box office this weekend. Meanwhile, the film Wonka with Timothée Chalamet continues to exceed expectations.
A little king of the box office
A star cast, unbridled fights, action, humor… Matthew Vaughn’s new film (Kingsman, Kick-Ass) nevertheless had all the assets to be a hit. But Argyle has never really been able to convince spectators to go to theaters, and has a first weekend of release in the United States at only 18 million dollars.

This certainly allows it to secure first place in a box office in small form, but it remains a catastrophic launch for a production estimated at 200 million dollars. A new popular snub for an Apple production, after the failures of Napoleon ($219 million worldwide), and Killers of the Flower Moon (156 million).
We could argue that the Cupertino company’s primary objective is not the box office, but rather a certain prestige and to complete the catalog of its Apple TV+ streaming platform. Nevertheless, the critical and public failure ofArgyle should not make Tim Cook smile.

In a more than modest start to the year 2024 at the box office, certain films are making their way. This is the case of The Beekeeper with Jason Statham. For its fourth weekend, the film is once again on the podium, and has grossed $123 million worldwide.

Released mid-December, Wonka with Timothée Chalamet also takes advantage of the desert of outings to display good longevity. Paul King’s film grossed another 4.7 million this weekend and exceeded 200 million dollars in the United States. In the world, Wonka peaks at 571 million, and confirms that it is one of the great successes of recent months. A sequel is undoubtedly in the pipeline.
The box office should wake up (a little) next week with the arrivals of the Marvel film Madame Web and the biopic Bob Marley: One Love.
