The doctors’ struggle was desperate. Even when little Alessandro* (†10) was taken from Mondovì Hospital in Cuneo to Turin’s Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital on Monday morning, his condition seemed extremely critical.
Body temperature had dropped alarmingly. The boy had severe pain in his lower limbs. In addition, a heart disorder and the disintegration of the muscle fibers were found.
Even blood washing could not save little Alessandro
In the intensive care unit everything was tried to save the life of the little patient. Doctors tried every possible known treatment for the virus. Even blood washing was done. Vain. On Tuesday at 5.55 a.m. the boy’s heart stopped.
“The child died of Covid,” confirmed the hospital a few hours later in a press release. “The virus has attacked his heart. We have never seen the course of the disease like this,” the medical team explained to the newspaper La Stampa, “we tried all night to save the child. We did not make it”.
“The tragedy hits us all”
The little boy’s death is shocking. And poses riddles. Because Alessandro had no previous illnesses. He was not vaccinated, the only one in his family. The news shocked his home town of Nucetto, at the entrance to the Tarano Valley near Cuneo.
“We are a small community,” says Mayor Enzo Dho, “the tragedy affects us all.” Condolences also from distant Turin: “The management of the municipal health department is close to the family at this moment of deep pain”.
