JDid Bolsonaro have something to be ashamed of in the assault on Brasilia? On January 8, his supporters ransacked public buildings. Brazil’s public prosecutor’s office then asked the Supreme Court on Friday, January 14, to open an investigation into Bolsonaro, who has been in the United States since the end of December. Brazil’s ex-president is suspected of being one of the ‘instigators and moral perpetrators’ of depredations at national institutions in the capital, a week after the left-wing leader took office Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, explains the prosecution in a press release.

The far-right former president, narrowly beaten by left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, “made a public incitement to the execution of a crime” by posting a video on social networks “challenging the regularity of the presidential election of 2022”.

The video was published two days after the violent invasion of the headquarters of the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court by thousands of Bolsonarists on January 8, then deleted, the prosecution said.

The prosecution maintained that even if the video had been broadcast after the ransacking, it could provide “a link of proof” which justified “a global investigation into the acts carried out before and after January 8, 2023” by Jair Bolsonaro.
