Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, 66, was urgently hospitalized early Monday morning in Sao Paulo due to a probable new intestinal obstruction, unable to return to Brasilia at the end of his family vacation in the south of the country.

The presidency announced the admission of the Head of State to the Paulista Hospital of Nova Star for “various examinations” following “abdominal pain”, confirming information first given by the main Brazilian media. “The president is well and is being treated,” the brief official statement continued, pending the publication of a medical bulletin. It was not known at this point whether he should have the operation.

Suspicion of “intestinal sub-occlusive”

Since a stabbing assassination attempt in September 2018, Bolsonaro has undergone numerous operations on his abdomen for adhesions and was treated for the same problem in July 2021, at the facility he was in again on Monday. . The hospital for its part declared that Bolsonaro was “in stable condition” and that he had been admitted for a suspected “intestinal sub-occlusive”.

TV Globo previously broadcast footage of the far-right head of state disembarking at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo from the presidential plane while walking, accompanied by his relatives. He came from Santa Catarina, having left his vacation spot during the night.

Antonio Luiz Macedo, the surgeon who has previously operated on the president’s abdomen, told the UOL news site that Jair Bolsonaro would undergo various examinations, including a tomography, due to a probable bowel obstruction.

Last July, the head of state in office since January 2019 had undergone a four-day treatment for an occlusion in Vila Nova Star, after being transferred from the armed forces hospital in Brasilia where he had been urgently admitted. with severe abdominal pain.

Jet ski and vacation

This is the last known condition of the Brazilian president who has suffered recurrent abdominal alerts for more than three years and the start of his mandate. Since being stabbed in the intestine in September 2018, while campaigning for the presidential election, apparently by an imbalance, Bolsonaro has undergone at least four surgeries on the digestive system.

The daily O Globo in particular assured Monday that Bolsonaro had finally been forced to “interrupt” his very controversial vacation in the state of Santa Catarina, where he arrived with his family on December 27. He had wished not to have to cut short his vacation at the sea to go to the state of Bahia stricken by deadly floods at the end of the year.

The images of the president strolling on the beach, in an amusement park, or jet-skiing had created controversy in Brazil after the deadly rains in Bahia which affected more than 470,000 people and prompted 136 localities to declare the ’emergency state. The president’s official agenda, however, called for a return to Brasilia on Monday, even if it was empty.
