Jair Bolsonaro pledged on Tuesday to “respect the Constitution as president” of Brazil, breaking his silence two days after his electoral defeat against left-wing leader Lula, whose victory he did not recognize. His chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, indicated after a very brief speech by Bolsonaro at the presidential palace that the latter had “authorized the transition”.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also said on Tuesday that protests in his support must be “peaceful”, condemning roadblocks that “prevent freedom of movement” across much of the country.

“Peaceful demonstrations always welcome”

During this first speech since his presidential defeat against Lula, Jair Bolsonaro began “by thanking the 58 million Brazilians” who voted for him on October 30. “The current popular movements are the result of indignation and a feeling of injustice regarding the way the electoral process unfolded. Peaceful demonstrations will always be welcome”, he added, qualifying however “But our methods cannot be those of the left, which have always harmed the population with intrusions into private property and destruction of heritage, and by restricting freedom of movement.”

“The right has really emerged in our country,” continued the beaten Brazilian president. “Our strengthened representation in Parliament shows the strength of our values: God, Homeland, Family and Freedom. We have trained many leaders throughout Brazil, and our dreams are more alive than ever. We are for order and progress Even in the face of the whole system, we overcame a pandemic and the consequences of a war,” he said.

“I have always respected the framework of the Constitution”

Jair Bolsonaro ended his speech saying he had “always been labeled as undemocratic”. “And unlike my accusers, I have always respected the framework of the Constitution,” he said. “I have never spoken of controlling or censoring the media and social networks. As President of the Republic and as a citizen, I will continue to respect all the commandments of our Constitution.”

“It is an honor to be the leader of millions of Brazilians who, like me, defend economic freedom, religious freedom, freedom of opinion, honesty and the green and yellow colors of our flag,” said concluded Jair Bolsonaro.
