She smokes, drinks, eats too much candy, swears like a tinker and – she’s single. Bridget Jones does not correspond at all to the ideal of women that advertising and Hollywood pretend. In Sharon Maguire’s theatrical adaptation of Helen Fielding’s bestselling novel, Bridget is determined to finally find her prince charming, but she must first choose between two frogs. Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is in her early thirties and has a loose mouth. Not particularly successful with men or at work, the London native considers her life to be quite deplorable. On the other hand, she likes herself the way she is, and the superfluous advice of her self-satisfied friends really gets on her nerves. When she wakes up alone again after a New Year’s Eve party, Bridget decides that now she must finally find him – the man of her life. And right away. She has already identified two candidates. On the one hand there is her boss Daniel Cleaver. He’s smart, he’s incredibly good-looking and has turned Bridget’s head so much that she constantly embarrasses herself in his presence. Unfortunately, Daniel is a hopeless egoist, shies away from responsibility and chases every rock. Secondly, Bridget has Mark Darcy on hand, a nice, polite man her parents wanted to set her up with. It didn’t spark at all when they first met, but as time goes on, Mark reveals his qualities. However, things get complicated when Bridget accidentally ends up in bed with Daniel. Bridget Jones made her debut in a 1995 column in The Independent. Helen Fielding’s weekly tales of the chaotic life of a single woman hit the pulse of the times. The following year, Fielding expanded the column on the novel and landed an international bestseller. In the film adaptation, the buxom, quintessentially British original is embodied by a petite Texan of all people: Renée Zellweger. The film was able to seamlessly continue the success story of the column and novel. Almost four million cinema viewers watched him in Germany alone. The “Hörzu” described “Bridget Jones” as “a longed-for ray of hope in the swamp of countless single comedies”. How Bridget unswervingly works through the pitfalls of reality is portrayed in the film with verve, warmth and absurdity. The characters and their milieu are aptly described, and the actors always find the right tone; Above all Renée Zellweger, who was able to garner nominations for Golden Globes and Oscars in her role as a funny and subtle single. By the way, Honor Blackman, better known to most as “Bond” girl Pussy Galore from “Goldfinger”, can be seen in a supporting role.

Bridget Jones believes she can achieve her dreams alongside Mark Darcy. But instead of enjoying life as a couple, Bridget is plagued by (self-)doubts and questions. And it doesn’t take long before she suspects she has a real reason to be jealous – and Daniel Cleaver reappears in her life. Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is finally no longer a relationship pariah, because she and London human rights lawyer Mark Darcy are a couple. He is her personal sex god, which unfortunately only partly helps to get over the fact that both come from very different worlds. While Mark has already arrived professionally, Bridget is still tinkering with her journalistic career at a small station. And what’s more, after only eight weeks of dating, Bridget suspects that Mark is cheating on her with his beautiful work colleague Rebecca. Bridget puts in a small series of her notorious appearances, but after a big banquet by the London lawyers and a subsequent skiing holiday in Austria, Mark and Bridget separate. Around the same time, the charmingly cheeky Daniel Cleaver reappears in London and on Bridget’s station. Together with him, Bridget is to present a travel report from distant Thailand – a long time away from London with Daniel. Does this mean Bridget is tempted to reconnect with Daniel and the end of her relationship with Mark – the man she actually loves? The second part of “Bridget Jones” deals with the difficulties of living in a relationship in a humorous way. London is still one of the main locations, but this time Bridget gets to travel to other wonderful places in the world on her quest for true happiness. In addition to London, the film was shot in Thailand, Rome, Lech and Zürs am Arlberg.

Bridget Jones is in her 30s, single and unattractive. Because she wants to change this frustrating situation, she decides to turn her life inside out on New Year’s Day. She wants to quit smoking and find a man for life. Fate is kind to her and she meets two men who couldn’t be more different. So begins a funny mess that ends with a happy ending.
Bridget Jones is the film adaptation of Helen Fielding’s novel of the same name. The sequel to the novel was filmed in 2004 under the title “Bridget Jones – On the Edge of Madness”. Bridget Jones’ Baby, the third installment in the series, hit theaters on October 20, 2016.
