LONDON (Reuters) – Britain is to grant EDF 100 million pounds (about 120 million euros) in financing for the construction of the Sizewell C power station in eastern Suffolk, the British government announced on Thursday. .
Britain is aiming for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which will require a huge increase in low-carbon electricity generation, such as wind, solar and nuclear.
If built, the Sizewell C plant could produce 3.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, enough to power around six million homes.
The decision also comes against a backdrop of soaring gas prices globally, which have pushed up the cost of electricity across Europe. In Britain, electricity prices are expected to rise by around 50% from April.
“Given global gas prices, we need to ensure that the future of Britain’s energy supply is based on reliable, affordable and low-carbon energy produced in the country,” said the Minister. UK Business Minister Kwasi Kwarteng.
