Brits mourn in front of Buckingham Palace

Thousands mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II in front of the royal main residence in London. The loss of the queen after 70 years on the throne is a turning point for the country and triggers pain, uncertainty, but also gratitude among the population.

Many Britons bring flowers to Buckingham Palace on the first day of national mourning.

Hailey Morley leans against a wall near Buckingham Palace and writes down the names of all family members who were unable to travel to London today. She wants to put the short letter next to a candle that she placed in front of the gates of the palace in memory of the Queen. Even on the day after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Morley struggles to grasp the incomprehensible. “All my life the Queen was on the throne,” says the 50-year-old. “I can’t imagine anything else.”
