Valcourt (Quebec) Canada, January 14, 2022 – BRP’s (TSX: DOO; NASDAQ: DOOO) off-road brand Can-Am continues to establish its dominance on the global racing circuit as the new year begins, this time taking top positions in two categories of the famous Dakar Rally, in Saudi Arabia. These victories materialize a remarkable performance, the brand’s fifth consecutive championship in the Dakar Rally, which is considered the most grueling off-road race in the world.

Can-Am Factory racer Austin Jones (USA), and co-driver Gustavo Gugelmin (Brazil), finished with the fastest overall time in the T4 class representing production off-road side-by-side vehicles. Rider Gerard Farrés (Spain) finished in second place and Rokas Baciuska (Lithuania) followed him in third place, completing a Can-Am hat-trick on the podium. In fact, the top 17 racers in the T4 class were driving Can-Am vehicles and the first non-Can-Am branded vehicle to cross the finish line finished 18th, a whopping nine hours and 30 minutes behind Jones and Gugelmin.

In the T3 category, representing prototype vehicles made by specialist manufacturers and the last stage before the automotive stage, Can-Am racers took first and second places. Francisco Lopez and his co-driver, Juan Pablo Latrach Vinagre, both from Chile, took first place, followed by Sebastian Eriksson (Sweden) and his co-driver, Wouter Rosegaar (Netherlands).

“It’s amazing to win the Dakar Rally,” Jones said. “This event is truly the ultimate in off-road racing. Anything can happen, and we pushed hard until the end against very tough opponents. My co-driver and my team did a great job, and the Can-Am vehicle was awesome with its performance and durability. »

The 2022 Dakar Rally covered around 8,400 km (5,200 miles) over some of the most difficult and technical terrain in Saudi Arabia. Drivers faced cliffs, canyons, dunes and rocky trails, putting their skills and their vehicle to the test.

Can-Am racers were supported by South Racing Can-Am which had more than 150 employees in Saudi Arabia, helping to take care of everything from mechanics to logistics and meals for more than 21 Maverick X3 Can-Am racers. . Can-Am vehicles built by South Racing have a 100% finish-line record in the Dakar Rally and have won every year, in the side-by-side category, since 2018.

“It takes a real team effort to accomplish what our Can-Am off-road team just did in the Dakar Rally,” said Sandy Scullion, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing and Services, Motorsports Group at BRP. “We have the best, from drivers to support staff to the incredible Maverick X3 Can-Am platform. We can’t wait to see what lies ahead for the rest of the year on the race tracks as we plan to continue our incredible momentum with championships contested around the world. »
