The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has developed guidelines for cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). C-ITS rely, for example, on autonomous communication between vehicles in order to exchange information about construction sites or traffic jams.
In the Technical Guideline TR-03164 that has now been published, the authority makes recommendations for the secure operation of public key infrastructures (PKI) and C-ITS stations for intelligent transport systems. It is a supplement to the EU requirement Certificate Policy for Deployment and Operation of European Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and relevant standards.
The BSI paper is available in the form of two documents. The first part of the guideline is aimed at PKI operators and concerns the implementation and operation of certification authorities in the context of C-ITS. The second part of the guideline, on the other hand, regulates the configuration, registration and operation of C-ITS stations.
Cooperative intelligent transport
The possibilities opened up by cooperative intelligent transport systems are promising. By exchanging information about hazards such as accident or construction sites, traffic flows can be (re)routed intelligently. This could make road traffic more comfortable, more efficient and safer.
The BSI supplements and specifies existing European specifications in the Technical Guideline TR-03164. It claims to have a consistently high and consistent level of security in all instances of the European C-ITS Security Credential Management Systems to be complied with while ensuring the interoperability of the C-ITS participants.
